2014 TCA Convention

A Hybrid Solution - FCUSD Education Services Center

Stephen Pelham, Principal Structural Engineer, Barrish Pelham & Associates

During this session, Mr. Pelham provides information on the performance of tilt-up concrete construction during past earthquakes, current seismic code provisions for tilt up concrete, and a practical approach to the design of multi-story tilt-up concrete structures in earthquake country.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the historical performance of tilt-up buildings during earthquake events.
  2. Identify the unique stresses applied to multi-story building applications integrating a tilt-up envelope.
  3. Determine the effectiveness of tilt-up building envelopes to provide for evolution in seismic design codes.
  4. Evaluate the multi-story tilt-up building solution.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
