Saunders Construction, Inc.

Saunders Construction completed their judging review as a panel of three staff members.

As a leader in the Colorado construction industry since 1972, Saunders has demonstrated its dedication to the Front Range region and beyond. From well-known education, mixed-use complexes, healthcare, industrial, municipal, residential, recreation and office buildings to major retail centers, we bring the value, reliability and integrity that comes with a company based upon a proud tradition of excellence and a dedication to building for the community. Over the last few years, Saunders has consistently ranked as one of the top contractors in the State based on revenues. We are also one of Colorado’s largest private companies. Saunders is locally owned and operated with one office location in Centennial, Colorado.

As a true general contractor, we employ over 400 office and skilled field personnel including foremen, carpenters and laborers, providing us with the ability to self-perform certain portions of the work. By training our own forces to complete concrete work, general labor and carpentry, we can ensure quality workmanship and dramatically accelerate our project schedules.

In 1982, Saunders formalized a preconstruction services department, which is now one of the largest and most accomplished groups of its kind in Colorado. From early conceptual planning through development and actual move-in, we approach each aspect of a project from the Owner’s perspective - balancing the often competing objectives of design integrity, construction efficiency, and operation continuity with an in-depth understanding of the exacting challenges our clients face.

Saunders is one of this region’s leaders in sustainable construction. Since 2003, Saunders has completed 11 projects that are LEED Certified. We currently have 12 more either under construction or in the planning stages that will seek LEED certification. To keep abreast of current trends, standards and certifications, Saunders is a member of the USGBC and currently has 59 LEED Accredited Professionals.

Photo of Todd EdgeTodd Edge

Project Manager at Kenneth R. Carlson, Architect - P.A.

Todd holds a Bachelor's of Science in International Business Degree from Florida Atlantic University (FIU) as well as a Master's of Architecture from FIU.

While studying at FIU, Todd was hired by Joel Middlebrooks of BBM Structural Engineers. Middlebrooks's guidance, mentorship, and most importantly, friendship had a profound impact on how Todd designed projects while at FIU.  During a recent return as a guest critic for a Graduate Design Class, Todd was able to share the same insight with the next generation of designers and teach them about the beauty and use of Tilt-Up construction.

Todd's first job in architecture was for George F. White, AIA, where he continued to learn about Tilt-Up construction - this time from an architect's viewpoint. Todd worked on a number of hotel and warehouse projects utilizing Tilt-Up. After a few years with George White, Todd joined Kenneth Carlson, the TCA's 2009 Irving Gill Architect of the Year recipient.

Under the guidance of Ken Carlson and his colleague, Steve Torp, Todd sharpened his structural and Tilt-Up knowledge while applying an artistic twist to it as well, leading to his work on several TCA Achievement Award winning projects.

An instrumental piece of the Kenneth Carlson firm, Todd is at the forefront of Tilt-Up design and hybrid-Tilt-Up projects that also combine metal building systems. Todd's project background runs the gambit from churches to hotels, from office buildings to flex-warehouses, from automated boat storage facilities/marinas to parking garages and retail centers.

An active TCA member, Todd has contributed to the update of the "Architecture of Tilt-up" and served as a member of the TCA's Promotions Committee. He has also served on the TCA's judging panel for the past two years.

Todd is currently sitting for the architectural license exam and practices in South Florida.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
