One only has to look at the variety in submittals for the 2002 Tilt-Up Achievement Awards to appreciate that site-cast Tilt-Up concrete is no longer merely the solution for smart distribution and warehouse space. Project submittals describe how Tilt-Up "sets the stage" for the Jacksonville Symphony, allowed a TV station to stay "on the air," as well as create a "natural environment" for a wildlife museum. And, the winning projects that fall under the warehouse/distribution category are anything but 'boxy.'

There were more than 50 submittals in the ninth annual awards program, created to recognize outstanding Tilt-Up structures. Judging emphasis is placed on projects that utilize Tilt-Up concrete methods to introduce new building types, advance industry technology or provide a unique solution to a building problem.

According to Ed Sauter, Executive Director of the TCA, the judges were impressed with the quality, diversity of expression, and the breadth of building types represented in the 2002 competition.

The competition was judged by a panel of five individuals experienced in Tilt-Up construction, representing the spectrum of disciplines required in the Tilt-Up industry. Seventeen projects were selected.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
