The Project Mission for the new gymnasium at Central Davis Junior High was to incorporate the economy of Tilt-Up panels in a pleasing and meaningful way into a junior high campus of masonry structures.

Why Did the Owner Select Tilt-Up?
It was recommended as an economical and durable method. The District decided to use this project as a test. The design team and contractor knew that this building would make or break the owners' impression of this construction method on future projects.

What was the Overall Complexity of the project?
This athletic facility is constructed of site case, integrally colored Tilt-Up concrete panels. Colored panels are also suspended over the main entry to form the curved overhang.

What was the Project Mission?
To incorporate the economy of Tilt-Up panels in a pleasing and meaningful way into a junior high campus of masonry structures.

What were the special architectural treatments?
Two colors of concrete were used to have the facade stand out from the gym box background and to minimize the scale of the large walls. The basketball panels were given a medium sandblast leaving a color and texture very close to the actual pigskin of a ball. The large gym panels were very lightly sandblasted to create a mottled appearance to provided further contrast with the basketballs. Uniformity panel to panel was of particular concern. This was achieved by strictly adhering to quality control checklists developed by the contractor.

What were the outstanding features?
First; The design team and contractor worked together to find the best way to delineate the basketball seams in the curved panels. A sign company used the architect's CAD file to cut custom wood forms that created 3/4" deep recesses in the panels. Second; The design team and contractor also developed together a method of suspending eleven panels over the main entry.
