1996 Tilt-Up Achievement Award Winner
Owner: Budapest Electric Works Company, Inc.
Piraton, Ltd., a tilt-up subcontractor in Budapest, Hungary, completed a tilt-up electrical substation building for the ELMU, Inc. utility of Budapest in December, 1994. General contractor was UNMUSSIG, Ltd., also of Budapest.
The 28,000 square foot structure is among the first tilt-up projects completed in eastern Europe, and it is one of the first completed tilt-up THERMOMASS® insulated sandwich wall buildings in Europe. Final cost was approximately $70.00 per square foot (USD).
Ferenc Dittler and Istvan Major, principals in Piraton, Ltd., hope to expand the market for tilt-up structures in Hungary. Initial plans called for convention concrete construction for this substation. But the customer was sold on the advantages of tilt-up with the insulated sandwich walls.
One hundred eighteen separated panels in 64 different versions were needed because of the unusual geometric arrangement of the building that resulted from complicated electrical switching needs. The building is fairly plain, but the logo of the customer, ELMU, was cast into the external layer of an end panel.
