The 2011 CC100: Realistic Optimism, published in the July 2011 issue of Concrete Construction, dives deeper into the rankings and their reflection of the times we have seen and are in. Mr. Palmer submits that we keep in mind, “only three years ago, the industry was in its third year of double-digit increases in volume.” He suggests, “…if the industry has yet to see any significant recovery, at least it appears it has reached the bottom. After concrete-related revenue declines of 1% in 2008 and 26% in 2009, the drop in 2010 was only 5%. Of the top 100 companies, 44 reported losses in 2008, 81 in 2009, but “only” 51 in 2010.”
As Mr. Palmer states in his observations, “The percentages of work have changed, led by an increase in the percentage allocated to highway and heavy construction.” He suggests, “This is due to the impact of the stimulus money from the federal government combined with drops in building construction.” Mr. Palmer goes on to discuss Tilt-Up specifically stating, “Tilt-Up has taken a hit with the lack of construction of offices and warehouses. Tilt-Up was 10% of the total in 2007 but only 4% in 2010. The total revenue for the top 10 Tilt-Up contractors dropped from a high of $612 million in 2007 to $215.4 million in 2009 to $168.5 million in 2010—a 72% drop from 2007 and a 22% drop from 2009.”
Included in these numbers is a representation of the percentage Tilt-Up concrete constitutes in annual company revenue. Three companies on this list; Seretta Construction, Builders Plus and Woodland Construction have 100% of their revenue in Tilt-Up construction. Keystone Concrete Placement has the highest revenue of any company reporting Tilt-Up construction; followed by Seretta Construction, Concrete Strategies and Builders Plus.
“We realize the impact the recession has had on companies throughout the country that have been known for their prominence in Tilt-Up construction,” states Ed Sauter, TCA Executive Director. “The fact that so many TCA companies continue to be present on this list remains indicative of the significant role Tilt-Up construction has in our nation’s economy and why we continue to see surging global interests in this delivery method.”

TCA was founded in 1986 to improve the quality and acceptance of site cast Tilt-Up construction, a construction method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment.
